Brief introduction of the tool
Edmodo is a private microblogging platform that was designed to be a safe alternative to traditional social networks to use in the classroom. Teachers and students can send notes, links, files, alerts, assignments, and events to each other.
Advantages of the tool
The advantages of Edmodo.com are that it allows teacher to connect with other teachers across the country and also with their students. The site allows teachers to create groups for their students to join and then in these groups, teachers can post assignments, polls, links, important messages, and so on. Another cool feature is its status wall that could be used to start class discussions where students can debate each other or even help each other out on homework problems.
The site also contains organizational tools for teachers such as a calendar and a grade book so that teachers can post student grades rather than making then have to ask in person all of the time.
This site is efficient in the aspect that in creates one place where assignments and grades can be posted, questions can be asked, and discussions can be started.
Disadvantages (limitations) of the tool
Some disadvantages of edmodo are that there is no instant messaging. Though you get to post messages, there is no chat room for the users to make communication faster. Another disadvantage is of the organization of recent messages. A “new reply” will pop up after a new message is wrote, but doesn’t show up on the most recent posts in order of post. This limitation can cause confusion if you don’t read posts in order of reply. Other problems with this type of communication are that there are no alerts via email. When a member replies or posts information on the site no notification is alerted if you’re not logged in. Another drawback of not having instant messaging or chat is that there is no way to interact privately, everything is public, therefore students may be hesitant to ask good questions.
Application of the tool in your subject area Secondary Science (Chemistry) and Secondary Math-Edmodo will mostly be used as a means of communication between teacher-student and also student-student in secondary science or math education. Science and math teachers can use the site to share information with students, post assignments and grades, start discussions, answer questions, and organize lesson plans, activities, and other things in to a calendar The site can be used to collaborate with other teachers as well. Science and math students could use the site to to receive information from teachers, or ask questions. The information that these students would more than likely receive would be: assignments, due dates of assignments, test dates, planned daily activities, important announcments, and their grades. They could also use Edmodo to participate in class discussions on random topics or ask the teacher questions about homework or other problems they are having.
